6.6 Business activity models

• Principles of business activity models: BAM aims to conceptualize business views/perspectives.
For this reason, there will be one BAM per business perspective and several BAM are analysed for developing a consensual unique BAM.
Who and where is never described in a BAM, what/why helps in identifying improvements within a business situation.

• Types of activities:
– Planning activities: resources required (what type, how their performance would be measured (KPI)).
- Enabling activities: resources and facilities needed by doing the activities (raw materials, staff, infrastructure) .
- Doing activities: primary tasks that enable achieving business transformation targeted.
- Monitoring activities: activities enabling performance checked against targets defined within planning activities.
- Controlling activities :

• Dependencies: activities are related and the logical dependencies are drawn as arrows.
• Modelling notation: usually clouds symbols are used.
• Developing a business activity model: identify doing main activities, look for enabling activities, identify planning activities, add monitoring and controlling activities. Draw dependencies.
• Producing a consensus model: examine necessity of each activity, imply stakeholders throughout workshops and merge views for forming a consensus model which can be a global consensus, 1% consensus or a consensus through accommodation.
