8.1 Gap Analysis

• Identifying areas of concern

BAM activities should be inspected and categorised into the 3 following areas:

  • operating satisfactorily - no immediate action.
  • some issues to be addressed - action required.
  • not in place - urgent consideration.

• Framework for gap analysis (elements of POPIT model)

Investigation for gap analysis should take in account the POPIT model which is based on:

  • Processes: consider the "as-is" and "to-be" processes.
  • Information and Technology: look at the core enabler of the business change like IT support, accessibility, alignment with the enterprise architecture.
  • Organisation: use the Mc Kinsey model (structure, shared values, systems, strategy, skills, staff, style) to set out all aspects that requires to be considered.
  • People: business changes affecting the staff needs to be analysed like skills, recruitment, staff development, motivation and reward.

• Formulating options

Once gap analysis have been undertaken, a holistic approach is considered for defining business architecture and requirements.
