7.3 The organisational view of business processes

A business process map outlines how a high level set of activities (or process) are triggered by an input and aims to deliver an output (benefits and value to customers) within specific boundaries.
Whereas a business process model shows a detailed view of each process.

For outlining a process model map, you need to think about:
  • processes which enable core processes
  • processes which provide an input to the business core process
  • and processes which simply deliver final products/services.
Michael Porter's value chain is a useful technique for identifying every processes, their links (core business or support functions) and to set out their boundaries (as explained beforehand). This concept can be reused for establishing a high level process organisation map and its value chain but imply that we understand the customers and products/services they want.
